King Edwin School is a growing, independent SEMH school based in Norton, within Stockton on Tees. The school opened in June 2014 and offers learning opportunities to young people from across the Tees Valley, many of whom have failed within a mainstream environment.

Teaching Assistant – 40 hours per week

Due to our growth, a vacancy has arisen for an SEMH Teaching assistant. The successful candidate will be highly experienced and able with respect to engaging with and supporting vulnerable and challenging children within this age bracket.

You will be required to work as part of a team, to create an environment, where young people between the ages of 8-16 who encounter social, emotional, behavioural and educational difficulties feel secure and can achieve their potential.

The appointee will be relentless in supporting our students to achieve a high standard of attainment throughout their time with the school, and in preparing the students for their next steps. Our Teaching Assistants must be flexible, innovative and responsive, able to work effectively with our teachers to identify every opportunity to help our children and young people develop their skills and confidence, both academically and personally.

You should also have an ability to deal with difficult situations and make appropriate decisions in line with the policies and procedures of the school, and be willing to undergo training as required. The successful candidate should also hold the relevant qualifications referred to in the job description and person specification.

An opportunity has arisen to join the expanding team at King Edwin School as a Subject Instructor – a staff member delivering ICT, Maths and English functional skills qualifications to a small number of students in a small group or on a one to one basis. King Edwin school is a rapidly improving school, growing in diversity and in the offer it can make to its students.  Over the last 2 years the curriculum offer to students has grown to include a range of life skills and vocational skills alongside the more traditional GCSE offer, resulting in students being able to study an appropriate and meaningful qualification, no matter what their starting point or ability, and in all cases, leading to a worthwhile and appropriate next step, whether that be college, a training provider or directly into employment.

In order to support this growth in diversity, we now wish to appoint  a Skills Manager, who will be a visionary leader for the vocational and life skills area.   The area is currently a pathway for around 20 students, and has 4 full time staff members working to provide the opportunity for students to achieve the very best outcomes.  The post holder will support the success of this area and develop it further with the school senior leadership  

The post holder will be expected to hold a 50% teaching timetable, comprising functional skills in English/Maths and ICT.  The remainder of the time will be dedicated to leadership and development activities in this growing area, including supporting the securing of appropriate next steps for the current student cohort, developing work experience opportunities, liaising with agencies to develop new opportunities, recruiting new students and quality assuring the provision generally.
